hung by the neck until dead…

I suppose that's the ending I can look forward to, at least according to the  which tarot card are you quiz                    found via the lovely arbed :

You are the Hanged Man (Hanging Ghost)

Self-sacrifice, Sacrifice, Devotion, Bound.

With the Hanged man there is often a sense of fatalism, waiting for something to happen. Or a fear of loss from a situation, rather than gain.

The Hanged Man is perhaps the most fascinating card in the deck. It reflects the story of Odin who offered himself as a sacrifice in order to gain knowledge. Hanging from the world tree, wounded by a spear, given no bread or mead, he hung for nine days. On the last day, he saw on the ground runes that had fallen from the tree, understood their meaning, and, coming down, scooped them up for his own. All knowledge is to be found in these runes.

The Hanged Man, in similar fashion, is a card about suspension, not life or death. It signifies selflessness, sacrifice and prophecy. You make yourself vulnerable and in doing so, gain illumination. You see the world differently, with almost mystical insights.

Take the Test to Find Out.

(edit) it does bring to mind one of the best insults ever delivered:

Egad sir, I do not know whether you will die on the gallows or of syphilis.
That will depend, my Lord, on whether I embrace your principles or your mistress.

fqotd – picky macpickersons

fqotd: If you could recommend your least favorite Voxers for someone new to Vox to avoid, who would they be?

A:  yeah, is about as bad as today's qotd.  not going to answer either.  picking favorites is at best an exercise in futility and at worst ends with hurt feelings.  I have a particular issue with the term "favorite": it is way too vague to mean anything.
if the qotd had asked, for example,  "who posts the best landscape pictures", or "who is the best ranter" or "who makes me laugh uncontrollably", or "who has the funniest mother"
*, then there'd be a point in answering.

* at this point a tie between

boogie mats. a magic carpet ride indeed

a while back, courtesy of the fabulous ms. pants and her treasure chest o' funky delights, I became the proud owner of a couple of 'boogie mats'.  as seen in the following clip, the feline members of the household were quite intrigued and trippy:

yep, the kittehs were thrilled.  they have, however, found they much prefer their catnip au naturel.  Stevie much enjoys rolling on it, while Hank takes her catnip via mouth (yep, she eats it. weeeird).  the boogie mats are still getting a great deal of use; they have become Hank's preferred sleeping surface.

a rainy Saturday afternoon…

Mariser + bored
Steven E. + catnip

pardon the dreadful quality of the video; I've uploaded in to YouTube and it looks much better there.  but same as others have experienced, I can't find it to add it to my videos.  damn.  the SO thinks this so because there is a time lag before the Vox indexing of YouTube catches up to recent uploads.  whatevs.

language on video may be NSFW or common sense.  maybe best enjoyed after a few drinks.

edit 1/24/2007 @1522:  added 'Pastor' Davies website.  I seriously still don't know whether this is satire.

Liveblogging the State of the Union address

hey y'all!  is that time again.  grab an adult beverage, turn on your TV/radio, and join in liveblogging the 2007 State of the Union (SOTU) address.  just add your comments below.  profanity is, as always, welcome.

here's a quick cheat sheet with the topics of the SOTU:

ENERGY: Cut U.S. gasoline consumption by 20 percent by 2017 by boosting mandates for production of ethanol and other alternative fuels. Also, raise fuel-efficiency standards for passenger cars, light trucks and SUVs. Let transportation secretary set the standard, not Congress. Double the oil-storage capacity of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve over 20 years to 1.5 billion barrels.

GLOBAL WARMING: Cut emissions from cars and light trucks by 10 percent over 10 years by reducing gasoline consumption and improving fuel efficiency. The president's goal is to stop the growth of greenhouse gas emissions from U.S. motor vehicles by 2017.

HEALTH INSURANCE: Make employer-provided health insurance taxable income after a standard deduction of $15,000 for families and $7,500 for singles. Redirect money from Medicare and Medicaid and hospital funding toward new grants to states to help subsidize health insurance for individuals.

IMMIGRATION: Pass comprehensive overhaul of immigration law. Create a temporary "guest-worker" program. Provide a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already here, including making them pay fines and learn English. Continue stiff border enforcement.

IRAQ: Expand U.S. forces by 21,500 to help Iraqis quell sectarian violence in Baghdad and insurgent-infested Anbar province. Press the Iraqi government to make measurable progress on benchmarks toward a political settlement to strengthen public support for it.

EDUCATION: Renew the No Child Left Behind Act, which sets federal test standards for elementary school children.

STRONGER MILITARY: Boost the number of service members by 92,000 over five years. Add 65,000 soldiers to the Army, raising the total to 547,000. Add 27,000 Marines, bringing the total to 202,000.

RESTRAIN SPENDING: Balance the budget by 2012. Cut "earmark" spending projects' cost in half this year. Make identities of earmark sponsors more transparent.

AIDS/MALARIA: Sustain the five-year, $15 billion program to fight AIDS worldwide, especially in 15 target countries. Sustain the five-year, $1.2 billion program to fight malaria in 15 hard-hit African countries.

a day late and a dollar short

I didn't get to participate in Blog for Choice yesterday.  my bad. as to my position on abortion, just read this post by RedZilla and pretend I wrote it.  ;)

so I'll just call your attention to the proposed Georgia anti-abortion law,  Georgia H.B. 1.  not only would this legislation, if passed, ban abortions outright but it does not exempt the woman seeking the abortion from prosecution. one thing worth noting about this proposal is the inclusion of these "facts" (my comments in green)

  • Legalized abortion has created a "dramatic rise in the incidence of child abuse and a dramatic weakening of family ties," how? how do you abuse children you don't have?

  • "[W]omen who have had an abortion require psychological treatment of such symptoms as nervous disorders, sleep disturbances, and deep regrets,"

  • "[W]omen who have had an abortion suffered from diagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder,"
  • "[W]omen who reported post-abortion trauma also reported suicidal tendencies,"
  • "Abortion results in increased tobacco smoking,"

  • "Abortion is linked to alcohol and drug abuse," this statement and the four above are difficult to tease apart . one could argue that women who seek abortions are less likely to use birth control, which is correlated to lower educational level which is correlated to increased use of tobacco and alcohol, which is related to… ad infinitum

  • "Most couples find abortion to be an event which shatters their relationship," while this may seem correct at first glance, what are the chances that relationship would have survived an unwanted child?

  • "Abortion exploits women, treating them and their children as mere property," I don't understand this. at all.

  • "Abortion is contrary to feminist values, and the great suffragette Susan B. Anthony referred to abortion as 'child murder'," there is argument there, and the evidence is fragile even if Anthony was personally against abortion, there is no evidence that she ever was against the right to have one.

  • Legalized abortion has caused an "increase in breast cancer," not according to the National Cancer Institute

  • Legalized abortion "has had a profound detrimental effect on the health and well-being of the citizens of this state as well as the health of the economy," how? and to what extent? a citation, a study, a reference would be nice

  • Abortion has caused the state "an inestimable amount economically" including "the costs and tax burden of having to care for individuals and their families for the conditions cited above" and "a significant reduction of the tax base and of the availability of workers."  this one just blows my mind.  "reduce the availability of workers"?  is that the reason folks have children, is to provide workers for the state?

fqotd – worst movie ending evar

fqotd:  what movie (or book if you rather) was completely ruined by its beyond-sucking-ending?

A:  the absolute worst was American Beauty. not like the movie was a masterpiece to begin with, but the ending was a maelstrom of suckiness.  I mean, when Lester found out that Angela was not a slut but a nice, good girl (a virgin, even), I was almost praying "please fuck her anyway, please oh please oh please, don't walk away…" which he did.
bonus sucky points for casting Chris Cooper, one of the finest actors today as a one-dimensional redneck asshole.
