a poem

I got out of bed
on two strong legs
It might have been
otherwise. I ate
cereal, sweet
milk, ripe, flawless
peach. It might
have been otherwise.
I took a dog uphill
to the birch wood.
All morning I did
the work I love.

At noon I lay down
with my mate. It might
have been otherwise.
We ate dinner together
at a table with silver
candlesticks. It might
have been otherwise.
I slept in a bed
in a room with paintings
on the walls, and
planned another day
just like this day.
But one day, I know,
it will be otherwise

Lucifer must be lacing up his iceskates

surely hell has frozen over

not only did the Detroit Lions win over the hapless 'Skins (go Lions!) ending a 19-game and almost two-year-long losing streak

but the surprisingly-adept-and-long-time-pathetic Cincinnati Bengals beat  the surprisingly-weak-current-champions Pittsburgh Steelers

must be something in the water.

this is like, so cool

and the coolest part?  it was found by a fellow with a metal detector, poking around a private farm.

Terry Herbert: The finder

Terry is a metal detectorist who initially discovered the Hoard. Terry was detecting on private farmland with the written consent of the landowner. After uncovering an initial number of items Terry informed the Portable Antiquities Scheme, as required by the Treasure Act 1996. Terry remained an integral part of the team working on recovering the Hoard – an excellent example of archaeologists and detectorists working together.

An interview with Terry, along with the photographs, is being syndicated by the Press Association today. Terry does not plan to give any further interviews.

this is like so awesome.  go check the official site and marvel.  like one of the experts said, this find is going to redefine the Middle Ages in England.

check out pictures of hundreds of the artifacts in teh official flickr site

do cats *need* pettings?

of all the cats who have shared my life, Pepper is the only one who, to my sense, *needs* petting. has to have pettingks.  he'll come and sit at the desk, look at me or teh SO and mew plaintively until petted. he'll begin purring immediately; after a few pets he'll move a couple of feet away and proceed with whatever napping/cleaning/sitting business he has pending. these demands for pettings occur several times a day.

I know cats like to be petted and we like petting them, but with Pepper it seems like such a direct need that I wonder:  do any of y'all cats behave in a similar fashion?  am I just reading to much into a normal behavior?

they really let anyone in Congress, no?

I heart screen captures.  idiocy captured for the ages:

via the lovelies at Wonkette

oh, rep. Brady? when you go to Metro to demand answers, be sure to remind them that two months ago, in July, when a bill came to the House that included included $150 million for emergency maintenance funding for the DC Metro (HR 3288)

you voted against it
