The 3 Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch – NaBloPoMo 2010

an artificial arm, metal teeth, electronic eyes:  these are the 3 stigmata of Palmer Eldritch

The 3 Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch by Philip K. Dick

Earth is so warm as to be mostly inhabitable.  the world government (U.N.) is drafting many to colonize the solar system planets and moons.  the conditions for the colonists are brutal:  intense physical labor, crowded conditions, and hardly no material goods. thank the goddess for CAN-D!

CAN-D is a drug that makes the user enter the miniature world of the Perky Pat Layouts(tm); these tiny setups, with their miniature dolls, furniture, and goods are the only escape for the colonists.  Perky Pat Layouts(tm) are sold exclusively by PP Layouts (Ltd); PP Layouts (Ltd) also (secretly) controls the supply of CAN-D.

Palmer Eldritch, presumed dead, when rescued  from his travels past Pluto brings CHEW-Z a drug he claims is different and much more powerful than CAN-D.

    • all of these are from the bookshelves I showed y’all on October 31.

I’m a little mad at myself ‘cos I can’t find some of the books I’d like to write about.

      • This just makes me want to rip through piles of totes to find my books and post about them. Gah! Must resist the urge or bad things will happen.

  1. I haven’t read this in so long that I don’t remember how it ends. Not that the endings are the important part of PKD.

    • indeed. endings are PKD’s weakest parts.
but who cares about the end of the ride when the ride has been exhilarating?

  2. This list keeps getting better and better. I love how Dick thought pop culture and technology would become drugs for the masses after everyday life became unbearable for them. Bladerunner aka Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep was the capstone for this idea.

    • …Dick thought pop culture and technology would become drugs for the masses

did he nailed that or what?
