A Brave New World

both ripoffs of Yevgeny Zamyatin‘s WE

WE by Zevgeny Zamyatin

written between the years 1920-1921, WE depicts a world where the very few survivors of a devastating world war live in the One State, a city-nation made of glass, where noone has a name, but rather a code, the police are everywhere and watch everyone, and the “Benefactor” rules over all.

  1. one can see why it was “long-suppressed” under Soviet rule.

tho Huxley claims he didn’t read it before writing BNW. it was zeitgeist-y, I guess.

  2. LT is right. After World War I there was this feeling in Europe that the civilized world had come to an end, and it was about to be replaced by a unified totalitarian state that treated human beings like machines and machines like humans. They had no idea how quickly it would come in the 1930s.
